What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help individuals re-process and recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences. EMDR was developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980’s and has been extensively researched since.

Benefits of EMDR Therapy

EMDR is primarily known for treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but is also effective for anxiety, depression, phobias, panic attacks, and other emotional difficulties.

EMDR takes a holistic approach, addressing the emotional, cognitive, and physical aspects of distressing memories, providing comprehensive healing.

What to Expect in an EMDR Session

During an EMDR session, you will be guided to focus on a traumatic memory while simultaneously utilizing various forms of bilateral stimulation. This process helps the brain reprocess the memory, reducing it’s emotional impact and integrating it into a healthier, adaptive perspective.

How it works:

EMDR involves an eight-phase approach:

History Taking: Understanding your background and identifying trauma.

Preparation: Explaining the process and teaching relaxation techniques.

Assessment: Targeting specific memories and beliefs.

Desensitization: Using bilateral stimulation (like eye movements) to reduce emotional distress.

Instillation: Strengthening positive beliefs.

Body Scan: Ensuring no physical tension remains.

Closure: Ending the session with stability.

Reevaluation: Reviewing progress.

Is EMDR Right for you?

EMDR can be beneficial for individuals struggling with the aftereffects of trauma, persistent anxiety, or negative self-beliefs. We won't start EMDR in our first session. Instead, we'll work together to determine the best course of action and decide when to begin EMDR therapy and if it is a suitable approach for your specific needs and goals.
